When it comes to home decorating, there are few things more exciting than a blank wall.

Should you put a big and colourful painting there? Or perhaps a set of themed artworks? Or maybe photograph prints scaled to the size you want?

The possibilities are endless.

And while you can certainly do whatever you want with your wall, that doesn’t mean every choice will work out.

To make your decorating easier (and much more fun!), it helps to know what tends to work well and what doesn’t when decorating a wall with art.

Here are some of our top tips.

Do’s

Show your personality.

If there was a chance to showcase your personality without saying a word, this is it. When decorating your space with artwork, make sure you choose pieces that convey your personality. It’s your space – so make it your own!

Think about placement.

Nothing distracts more from a piece of artwork than the wrong placement. Always consider its position when installing it and any other pieces that will go around it.

Keep lighting in mind.

No matter how amazing an artwork may be, it won’t get the recognition it deserves if no one can see it properly. If you want to showcase a piece of art on your wall, make sure it’s clearly visible day and night with the right lighting.

Mind the size of your artworks.

Always consider the size of the artwork you’re putting up and its size relative to your wall. If the artwork is too big, it can dominate the entire room. Too small and it could be easily ignored. Balance is the key to making an art piece look and feel at home wherever you put it.

Choose the right frames.

Although not all artworks need to be framed, it’s important to choose the right ones for the pieces you do. They might seem trivial, but frames can make or break your wall decoration – so choose wisely.

Don’ts

Don’t get hung up (pun intended) on expensive artwork.

Here’s something you won’t often hear from interior designers: you don’t need expensive art to make your walls stunning. You can easily find affordable wall art collections online or even reprints of classic artworks, which can save you a lot of money in your decorations.

Don’t ignore height.

We know it can be tempting to just place a nice piece of art anywhere on a blank wall, but we always recommend putting a little more thought into it. Avoid putting it either too high or too low in your wall so people won’t ignore it.

Don’t forget other pieces in the room.

We’re not saying you always need to have an art theme for every room. But we do recommend being mindful of how a new piece fits with the rest of the artwork in your wall or room. This will help you avoid putting clashing pieces together.

Don’t be afraid to experiment.

The good thing about paintings and wall art is that you can easily swap or replace them if it’s not working out. So don’t be afraid to experiment and mix and match different pieces to see how they work together. You might surprise yourself with artworks you never thought would look great side by side!

Don’t decorate every empty wall.

As tempting as it is to decorate every empty wall, resist the urge if you can. Filling every available space with art can make your home look cluttered. Instead, decorate mindfully and allow some space between different pieces of art to give the viewer space to breathe.
